COCHLEAR IMPLANT AWARENESS, EDUCATION, INFORMATION AND SUPPORT FOR ADULTS

Cochlear implants may be the right solution for you if your hearing aids are no longer enough.

FUNDING FOR COCHLEAR IMPLANTS

In Aotearoa New Zealand, 120 cochlear implants are funded by the public sector each year. Additionally, private medical insurance can often cover some components of surgery and rehab.

For New Zealand adults, there are several funding options for cochlear implants:

  • Public Health System: This provides coverage for one cochlear implant, subject to meeting certain funding criteria.
  • Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC): For hearing loss related to an injury, ACC may fund two cochlear implants if clinically needed.
  • Private health insurance: Dependent on the policy you have in place, varying components may be covered. Please check with your provider or insurance broker.
  • Personal Funding: Some adults resort to family support, crowdfunding platforms like Givealittle, or other fundraising efforts to manage the costs associated with cochlear implants.

"The ability to be a part of a conversation again has been the biggest thing. My self esteem and confidence has taken a major boost and I actively look for people I know so I can chat with them. Strolling along with friends, having a coffee and chat is a simple pleasure I really enjoy now."

"The implant has resulted in a big improvement in my hearing but the social damage the hearing loss caused will take much longer to recover from. I’ve missed out on so much but I’m slowly getting back in touch with my family. It’s going to take time."
