Florence was New Zealand’s first cochlear implant recipient, and in 2015, we were honoured to have her as our guest at the inaugural Cochlear Implant Forum.
That gathering brought together the very people involved in her groundbreaking surgery—ENT surgeons Bill Baber and Ron Goodey, and audiologist Dr Bill Keith. It was a heartfelt and deeply respectful moment, acknowledging Florence's pivotal role in advancing hearing health in New Zealand.
Florence never sought attention or accolades; she simply lived with humility and resilience. Her unassuming bravery helped pave the way for many others to reconnect with the world of sound.
We remember Florence today not for grand gestures, but for the authentic way she lived her life—with warmth, quiet strength, and dignity. Her legacy endures in every moment of connection and sound made possible because of her.
Florence Woodward, you will be deeply missed and fondly remembered.
